In return for the Society undertaking to take

no further steps to boycott Messrs Butterfield and Swire,

the firm have agreed to:-

1. Pay $5,200 (/2000 contributed by the Compradore

and his staff) as compensation to the relatives of the

deceased passenger.

Dismiss the Captain of the ship.

Post a notice on the steamer, warning the Captain

officers and crew against illtreating Chinese passengers.

4. Use their best endeavours to secure a retrial of

the Portuguese watchman before the Portuguese Consul.

The Chinese newspapers add a fifth article,

namely an admission on the part of the firm that the pas-

senger was murdered by the watchman, but it is possible

that the firm's promise to reopen the case against the

watchman has been construed into an admission of his guilt.

I have the honour to enclose copy and trans-

lation of an article which appeared in the "Kwo Shih Pao*

of the 5th. August, announcing the conclusion of the

negotiations with Messrs Butterfield and Swire, and copy
